Celebrate the arrival of summer solstice with a beautifully set Midsummer table. Here at Nordic Nest, you will be able to find a large variety of stylish tableware and decorations to create the perfect atmosphere for your Midsummer celebration.
Midsummer is the longest day of the year and in Scandinavia it is a time to celebrate light, warmth and nature with one’s family and friends. In Sweden, celebrations include traditional dances and seafood buffets, while in Denmark and Norway, many people celebrate with bonfires.
In Sweden, Midsummer is a particularly special occasion and celebrated as a national holiday. During this time, many Swedes travel to the countryside to enjoy the celebration outdoors and in the nature with loved ones. Some popular traditions for Swedish Midsummer include making flower crowns called ‘Midsommarkrans’ and dancing around a decorated pole called the Maypole.
One of the most important parts of Midsummer in Scandinavia is the dinner on Midsummer’s Eve. In Sweden, foods such as herring, salmon and potatoes are traditionally served, with strawberries and cream for dessert. It is also typical to serve distilled spirits called ‘snaps’ which are enjoyed while singing traditional Swedish songs.
Create a truly traditional midsummer feeling by adding natural elements to your table setting and home. Fill elegant vases with wildflowers as a beautiful centrepiece on the dinner table or choose tableware and decorations with floral or botanical designs. Finish off the table setting by adding rustic candleholders to create a cosy and festive mood.
If you are looking for tableware for your Midsummer’s Eve table setting, here you will be able to find a large assortment from popular Scandinavian brands and designers.
For crockery with natural patterns and designs, we recommend the Havspil collection by the Swedish brand Scandi Living which includes high-quality porcelain inspired by the landscape from the east coast of Sweden.
The Ostindia collection by Rörstrand is also a popular choice for Midsummer, decorated with beautiful botanical designs. The collection includes everything from plates, bowls, mugs and cloth napkins so you can create a unified look on the table.
In Sweden, Midsummer is always celebrated on a Friday between the 19th and 25th of June, whereas in Norway and Denmark Midsummer is celebrated on the 23rd of June every year.
