Wool blankets have a permanent place on the sofa in almost all Nordic homes during the cold and dark winter months. Wool throws and blankets not only keep you warm, but they also serve as beautiful decorative accessories for both the sofa and on the bed.
Wool is a soft and robust natural material with a number of good properties that make it an ideal choice for blankets and throws. Firstly, wool is an anti-bacterial material. It is also both water-resistant and flame-resistant. In addition, wool is naturally dirt-repellent and therefore does not need to be washed as often as many other materials.
Wool throws and blankets can either be 100% wool, or can be blended with other materials. For example, to get a softer finish, materials such as viscose can be blended into wool blankets.
When deciding on what size wool blanket to buy, you should first and foremost consider what you will be using the wool blanket for. A large wool blanket is perfect for wrapping up in on cold days, while a small wool blanket is perfect as a bedspread, on the sofa or for the children’s rooms. The most common sizes for wool throws are:
Wool blankets and throws are also available in several thicknesses. Thick wool blankets will keep you warm on days when it’s really cold outside, while a thin wool blanket is nice to wrap over your shoulders on cool summer evenings.
Shake the wool blanket. Before cleaning your wool blanket, you should shake it well, preferably outdoors, to remove dust and lint that has accumulated in the blanket.
Air the wool blanket. Wool is naturally dirt-repellent, so often it is good enough to hang the wool throw out for airing, preferably in humid weather.
Remove stains from the blanket. If you get small stains on your wool throw, you can gently remove the stains with a soft, damp cloth.
Brush the wool blanket. Regular brushing of wool blankets removes dust particles and ensure that the wool fibres lie correctly. Gently brush the wool blanket with a wool comb.
If your wool blanket gets dirty and airing or shaking it is not sufficient for cleaning it, then it may need to be carefully washed. Before washing your wool throw, it is important to read the suppliers instructions to make sure that you clean it in the correct way. Some wool throws can be washed on a gentle program in the washing machine while other wool blankets must be sent to the cleaners.
When the wool blanket has been washed, let it dry in fresh air. Avoid hanging wool blankets in direct sunlight as this can cause the colours to fade.
High-quality wool blankets are not only comfortable and warm to wrap up in, but can also serve as a beautiful home accessory for many rooms in the home. A warm wool throw for the sofa is a perfect way to add colour and texture to the living room. It can also be nice to add a wool throw at the end of the bed as a beautiful decoration for the bedroom.
Tip: Combine several wool blankets with a practical storage basket. In this way you create a practical furnishing detail in the living room. The blankets can then be used when they are needed.
