1. Midsummer flower crowns & fresh blooms

No Swedish midsummer party is complete without the scent of fresh flowers filling the air. One of the most charming Swedish Midsummer party ideas is to gather seasonal blooms and use them to create table arrangements and handmade flower crowns—an essential accessory for the day’s festivities. While traditional wildflowers in shades of white and blue are a classic choice, feel free to mix in your personal favourites for a joyful, flower-filled celebration.

To make your own flower crown:

 • Scissors or secateurs
 • Wire
 • Your choice of midsummer flowers such as Daisy, Bridal Veil and Prairie Bell.
To tie your crown:

 • Pick the midsummer flowers you want and make sure you have them close at hand.
 • Make a circle out of the steel wire and create a loop of one end.
 • Wrap the flowers around the wire one at a time or make small bouquets of them if it makes it easier.
 • Secure the flowers with steel wire so that the stems are pinched between two twisting loops of wire
 • When you have covered the wreath, tie it together by hooking one end into the loop you previously created. Adjust the size by twisting the thread until the wreath fits perfectly!
Top tip: if you have flowers leftover place them in vases on the Midsummer table or add a small bouquet to each place setting.

2. Traditional midsummer table setting ideas

When it comes to the midsummer party alfresco dining is a must. Celebrate under the sun with a beautifully styled table that captures the essence of the season. Start with a crisp white tablecloth, elegant glasses and porcelain in classic blue and white tones—perfectly complemented by the vibrant red of summer strawberries. Mix and match different patterns for a relaxed yet refined look, as long as the colour palette remains cohesive. For a touch of timeless elegance, Rörstrand’s Ostindia and Ostindia Floris are ideal choices, and while blue and white is traditional we are loving the new green tones. Add height and greenery to the table with some vases filled summer flowers and include an additional pop of colour with bowls over flowing with the first strawberry harvests of the year.

3. The flavours of Sweden for your midsummer party

One cannot have a midsummer celebration without a traditional midsummer table and Swede's love to celebrate the high season with a literal smorgasbord of festive offerings. Celebrating the start of the most fruitful season of the year you'll find the midsummer table filled with the freshest new potatoes, gently boiled and seasoned with dill, Gravlax (a sort of cured salmon), along with sill (pickled herring) and the classic Västerbotten pie. But the star of the show is surely the strawberry cake, a light sponge cake topped with cream, a vanilla custard and lashings of Swedish strawberries this cake is sure to win the hearts of your midsummer guests both young and old alike.

A simple sponge layered with cream and strawberries and a vanilla custard is the perfect summer dessert.

 • 50g flour
 • 50g potato flour
 • 1 tsp baking powder

For the vanilla cream:

 • 200ml milk

 • Mix the dry ingredients separately.
 • Sift the flour mixture into the egg batter and stir everything together until smooth.
 • Pour the batter into a greased pan with a removable edge, about 24 cm in diameter
 • Bake in the middle of the oven for about 30 minutes until the is golden brown colour, insert a knife into the cake, if it comes out clean it is cooked. Let cool.

For the Filling:

 • Add all the ingredients for the vanilla cream to a cooking pot and whisk until well combined.
 • Gently heat the ingredients on the stove making sure to stir the whole time.
 • The custard should become thicker as you heat it, once it has thickened nicely remove from the heat and allow to cool.
 • In a separate bowl whisk the whipping cream until stiff peaks form.
 • Slice 1 punnet of strawberries

How to assemble the cake:

 • Slice the sponge cake base into three equal parts.
 • Spread a generous layer of vanilla cream on the first layer of cake.
 • Add the sliced strawberries so that the bottom is covered and then top with whipped cream. Repeat with the next layer.
 • Place the top back on the cake and spread the last of the whipped cream on top.
 • Garnish with whole strawberries and flowers.

4. And finally, a toast!

No list of Swedish Midsummer party ideas would be complete without mentioning one of the most cheerful traditions of the day: the snapsvisa. These playful, often humorous songs are sung between courses during the Midsummer meal, bringing everyone together in a moment of shared celebration. While it’s traditional to raise a small glass of snaps or spiced brännvin, it’s just as joyful to join in with a non-alcoholic alternative - perhaps a sparkling elderflower drink or homemade lemonade. The real spirit of the tradition lies in the music, the laughter, and the sense of togetherness. Skål!
