What does Le Creuset mean?

The company takes its name from the French word "creuset," which means crucible in French. When Le Creuset manufactures its cast iron products, the raw material is melted in a furnace and then poured into a crucible. The name thus comes from a step in their manufacturing process.

How are the pots and pans made by Le Creuset?

  1. The raw material is melted down in a furnace and then poured into a crucible, or "creuset" as it is called in French.
  2. The iron from the crucible is then poured into a sand mold.
  3. After the metal has cooled, Le Creuset's craftsmen break the sand molds to reveal the newly cast pot. Since the sand molds are broken each time after use, each pot is completely unique. Later, Le Creuset reuses the sand to create new pots and pans.
  4. At each step in the process, the pots are carefully inspected to ensure they maintain good quality. Up to 40 craftsmen examine each Le Creuset pot to ensure it reaches the highest possible quality before reaching the customer.

How to take care of Le Creuset products properly

  • Always wash Le Creuset pans and pots with warm water before the first use.
  • Le Creuset products are dishwasher safe, but hand washing is recommended as it is gentler. Overuse of the dishwasher may cause discoloration.
  • Always allow cast iron products to cool before washing them with warm water, without using detergent.
  • Use silicone utensils with Le Creuset products. They protect the surface of the products better than metal utensils.
  • Le Creuset products with wooden handles should not be used in the oven.
  • Always heat Le Creuset pans and pots on low to medium-high heat until they reach a medium-high to high temperature. This ensures the best cooking results and gives a nice sear to your ingredients.
