How to arrange your STOFF Nagel candle holder: the modular design with endless possibilities

The STOFF Nagel candle holder, created by Danish designer Werner Stoff and producer Hans Nagel in the 1960s, has become a modern design classic. Defined by its simple, geometric form, it continues to feel contemporary more than half a century later. Its enduring appeal lies in its versatility: each piece can stand alone as a sculptural object or be combined into expansive, modular compositions. At its core, the design is an invitation. Not just to use an object, but to arrange it.

A design that begins with just one

The STOFF Nagel candle holder is made to be arranged and rearranged. From a single piece to larger compositions, it adapts easily to different spaces and moods, whether placed on a table, grouped in clusters or even hung on the wall.

This guide offers a few simple ways to explore its possibilities.

Even a single STOFF Nagel candle holder stands on its own. Its three-legged form gives it a sculptural presence, like a small architectural detail on a table, shelf, or windowsill. On its own, it feels minimal and balanced, adding warmth and height without drawing too much attention.

Pairing and small clusters

With two or three candle holders, the design begins to shift. The modular form allows the pieces to connect, creating subtle variation and a sense of movement.

If you are looking to create something a little more sculptural but still understated, small groupings work well on coffee tables, bedside tables or narrower surfaces where a larger arrangement might feel too much. The composition can be kept compact; the candle holders can be stacked directly on top of each other or slightly offset for a more relaxed expression.

Expanding across the table

When more units are added, the STOFF Nagel system becomes a statement in its own right.

Arrangements can stretch across a dining table or sideboard in any direction, clustering in some areas and opening up in others, creating a dynamic and eye-catching centrepiece.

Some compositions follow a linear path, guiding the eye along the table. Others spread more freely, forming denser sculptural areas balanced by open space. However you choose to arrange your collection the result is guaranteed to get your guests talking.

Vertical statements and sculptural height

By stacking upward, the candle holders take on a different presence. Vertical arrangements add height and a stronger visual focus, turning the system into a clear focal point.

These taller formations work well on sideboards, consoles or dining tables where a more defined gesture is desired. The stacked structure feels almost architectural, like a small column or abstract tower made from repeated forms.

Even when slightly asymmetrical, the vertical compositions stay balanced through repetition and the consistency of the material.

Compliment with a candle stand

With the candle and floor stands your STOFF Nagel arrangements gain height, allowing the composition to be lifted off a surface and creating a luxurious expression. Placed in the centre of a table or sideboard, it works like a modern candelabra, adding a subtle sense of drama to the setting, whereas the floor stand allows the candle holder to become a design piece in its own right.

Add a new perspective with a wall installation

The STOFF Nagel system also includes a wall hanger, turning the candle holder into a floating arrangement. As with any STOFF composition, it can be kept small or expanded over time. Arrangements can be tightly grouped or spread across the wall using multiple hangers.

This approach turns the candle holder into a wall feature that shifts over time.

The added extras

The STOFF Nagel system can also be complemented with vases, bowls, candles, LED candles, and candle cuffs.

These elements add variation in height, surface, and light, allowing the composition to shift in character while staying within the same visual language. A candle can bring warmth, a cuff a subtle detail, a vase or bowl a pause in the rhythm.

Used together or individually they offer different ways to build atmosphere without changing the core expression of the system.

A system without a fixed form

There’s no right or wrong way to arrange the STOFF Nagel candle holder.

Start simple, add pieces over time and adjust the composition as your space changes. It’s a system that evolves with you, a design that is easy to shape, reshape and make your own.
