The Finnish designer Harri Koskinen studied at the Design Insitite Lahtis, which today is called the Aalto University. His undeniably most popular product is the Block Lamp which he designed during his studies for one of his workshops. The students were asked to design a wedding gift. He originally had a pair of shot glasses in mind, but came up with the idea for a lamp made of a block of glass instead. The Block lamp was taken into production by Design House Stockholm, and has become one of their absolute best-sellers.
With the Block lamp as a platform, Koskinen went to design products for world-renowned brands including Arabia, Muuto, Artek and Marimekko. In 2000 Koskinen founded his own design studio – Friends of Industry – and in 2012 he became head of design at Iittala. Today Harri Koskinen designs lighting, furniture, art glass and kitchenware. His designs are clean, simple and classically Scandinavian.
Throughout the years, Koskinen has won numerous design awards, such as the Torsten and Winja Söderbergs price, the Pro-Finlandia medal, the Kaj Franck and th Compasso d’Oro price, making him one of the biggest Finnish designers of this time.
