The Unikko plate from Marimekko bears the classic Unikko pattern, rendered here with a soft white backdrop and the iconic poppy flowers in a gentle hue of reddish-brown. The distinctive pattern was originally designed by Maija & Kristina Isola in 1964 after Marimekko's founder, Armi Ratia, announced an all-out ban on floral patterns. Despite this, Maija Isola managed to persuade her otherwise with this stylized depiction of majestic poppy flowers — thus, the Unikko pattern was born. Since that time, the elegant design has become something of a signature pattern for Marimekko, and a well-loved aesthetic by many all over the world.
